Childcare Tips
When it comes to childcare, many parents struggle to find a suitable organisation that is both suitable for their child and reasonably priced. It is vital that a childcare centre provide a happy, stimulating environment but also ensures the comfort, physical and emotional wellbeing of your child.
Centres can either be private or government based, and have different program formats and policies such as opening hours and fee structures.
Some centres only care for children with a certain age, a consideration that is essential especially when in need of care for an infant.
Childcare centres will often provide meals and snacks for children where appropriate, but menu plans vary as the centres do. Facility and staff ratios are enforced by governing bodies, but still differ between associations.
Choosing a childcare centre
When it comes to choosing a childcare centre or babysitter, it is 100 per cent the parent’s choice, and thus their duty to ensure the chosen centre will give the child the care and nurturing required.
A good place to start when choosing a childcare centre is to visit it yourself beforehand. Visit as many as you feel necessary before you’ve found one you’re happy with. Don’t be shy in showing your interest and concern as an active, caring parent.
What to look for?
First impressions always count. Observe the centre routines and happenings, chat with the staff and note how friendly and their rapport with the children. A friendly childcare tip would be that a centre should be clean, hygienic and safe. Happy children and pleasant staff are always a good sign.
Inspect staff ratios and determine whether they are reasonable. The centre should have play areas and toys chosen with safety in mind. The outdoor play area should be supervised, and there should be a storage area for children to keep their belongings.
